Sawtry Village Academy becomes the first Cambridgeshire School of Sanctuary

On July 14th 2017 Sawtry Village Academy became the first Cambridgeshire School of Sanctuary. This follows a year of regular activities involving students, staff and the wider community including fundraising for schools in a Lebanese refugee camp, collecting food packs for refugee families in Dunkirk and raising understanding and awareness through assemblies and whole school activities.

During International Refugee Week, 80 students from Sawtry Village Academy took part in two workshops organised by Cambridgeshire Schools of Sanctuary and hosted by Anglia Ruskin University.

“It has been an amazing journey and we feel that all of us, students and teachers, have learned so much about the need for tolerance, supporting people in need and the global refugee crisis,” says Ana Janjevak, a teacher at Sawtry.  Her colleague Isabelle Poidevin adds: “Some students have pointed out that they now realise that ‘being a School of Sanctuary is really important to show that we care’ and also that ‘the news doesn’t tell you all of this: we want to help children in trouble’.”
